❤️ NC Salon: The Year in Review

The Public Speaking Fellowship

2020 plunged us in front of the video conferencing tools. We were learning, working and connecting online. There was no option but to get in front of the camera and start talking. While we spoke more, we communicated less. More importantly, communicated less effectively. Things are unlikely to go back to the way they were. In this new normal, it is time all of us adapt our communication styles.  If there is one skill you should work on in 2022, it should be effective public speaking. If you are already good, try and get better. If you struggle, like roughly ~75% of the world’s population, it is time for deliberate practice. Public speaking is not something you can get good at by downloading an app. Just like you can’t learn driving by reading instruction manuals, you can’t become a good public speaker with a hands-off approach. You need to immerse yourself.

Starts Jan 15, 2021

PS. Here’s a talk by the first cohort of our Public Speaking Fellow

Ravi comes to Edward Jones from Emerson where he was responsible for Growth Strategy for various parts of the organization. He joined Emerson in 2015 after his MBA from Harvard Business School and worked in the Corporate Planning division where he supported the Emerson leadership to build strategies around M&A for both Emerson Corporate and various business units within Emerson.

Prior to Emerson and his MBA, Ravi was a part of India’s biggest conglomerate, the Tata Group. He was a member of TAS, Tata Group’s leadership development program.

t is that time of the year where we set ambitious goals to reinvent ourselves but setting new year resolutions is the easy part. By January 8, one week from the start of the year, 25 percent of new year resolutions fall apart. And by the time the year ends, we break 90% of our resolutions and fall back into the same old routines and rituals.

Most new year resolutions fail because behavioral change is hard, especially when we are busy, stressed and distracted, the default work mode for many millennials.

Newsletters

We wrote 150,000 words this year. These are some important concepts you may want to keep in mind as you reflect on the adventures of 2021.

Leena has built her category of one by being a deep-generalist par excellence. She learned problem solving from engineering, industry knowhow from factory floors where among other things she ensured washrooms were built for women and people management from a wide range of HR roles in Unilever where she championed diversity as a key component of corporate strategy.

The principle of being a deep-generalist is essential for solving complex problems at scale.

His playbook is simple — pick something aspirational, build it from ground-up, promote it leveraging personal brand and sell it at a premium. He started Rocawear in 1999 and sold it for $204 million to Iconix in 2007); Tidal in 2014 sold to Square for $300 million.

The interesting thing about Jay-Z’s approach is its replicability.
